I did a photo shoot with Melissa just before her first bikini competition a few weeks ago. Melissa is an aspiring fitness model who competed in the OPA bikini competition. For this fitness photo shoot, we did two looks. The first look was about engaging in fitness activities such as stretching and running. The second look was about showing off her physiques. After her first bikini competition, Melissa shared some of her experience and tips for other first time competitors.
W: What made you decide to compete?
M: I’ve always been interested in fitness and lifting. What really made me decide to compete was attending my friends bikini show. It looked like a lot of fun and a great goal for me to set for myself. Since quitting kayaking competitively after high school, I missed that hunger to succeed and put in work towards a goal everyday.
W: How did you prepare for your first bikini competition?
M: I started going to the gym 6-7 days a week and making sure I ate enough protein everyday. I researched coaches and found one that would give me workout and meal plans. Training consisted of cardio and weights most days while eating 6 meals a day.
W: What have you gained or learned from your first bikini competition?
M: I’ve learned new ways to train as well as what works for my body diet wise. I’ve developed a liking for fish/chicken which I never thought I would enjoy eating. It was great to meet a lot of driven, hard working girls like myself. It also opened my eyes to the sport and provided me with a great experience of what to expect for my next competition.
W: What tips will you give to first time bikini competitors?
M: Stay motivated, keep working hard even when you don’t see the changes right away. Most important though is to practice your posing! You could have the best body there, but if your posing is off you won’t do well.
W: Will you compete again?
M: I’m thinking about doing another show in three weeks and then I can just focus on school for rest of the year.
