I have been helping out on a gemstone jewelry product catalog recently. The catalog showcases new products for a Canadian gemstone jewelry distributor. They import small gemstones and jewelries from around the world. Some of these gemstone jewelry even have healing properties. My job is to create the catalog content. This included preparing and setting up each piece. Taking photos of each item from different angles. Selecting and editing pictures according to specification. We spent one long day and shot hundreds of items. Some pieces have a dull and dark surface. Some pieces have a shiny and metallic surface. We had different lighting setups based on the characteristics of each item. After the photo shoot, I spent another day culling and editing each image. This included cropping and resizing the photos. Removing any unwanted distraction such as hair or dust.
Small product photography may sound like a straight forward. The reality is that it is nothing but easy. Each piece of gemstone jewelry may have very different reflective and non-reflective property. It takes time to do a proper lighting setup. Since the gemstone jewelries are so small, a macro lens is often used. This means any finger print, dust or hair will show up in the photo, even though they are not visible to the human eye. I keep a bag of anti static wipes and a dust blower around.
Here are a small sample of images from the gemstone jewelry product catalog.
